Introduction to Pillars of Destiny

In Chinese astrology it is vital to know the Eight Characters of your horoscope, these being the characters for the HOUR, DAY, MONTH and YEAR of your birth.

Each of the HOUR, DAY, MONTH and YEAR of your birth will have a combination of the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch, giving a total of eight characters.

Take the example of a person known as Mr Samuel Richard, Male born on 6 March 1970 at 3.00am. With the resulting eight characters, namely falling under hour, day, month and year:-

Why is it called Eight Characters?

By looking at the above Chart, you will notice that there are 4 columns X 2 rows = Eight Characters. It is easy to understand why the Chinese call this theory simply as a person's Eight Characters.

Is the Eight Characters also known as Four Pillars of Destiny or Pillars of Destiny?

Yes! The Eight Characters is also known as the 4 Pillars of Destiny or simply as Pillars of Destiny because there are a total of 4 columns that make up the above table. Imagine each Column as a Pillar = Four Pillars.

In Mandarin, it is also called Pa-Zhi or Ba-Zhi which is a direct translation of the English word Eight Characters. Traditionally it was usually written from Right to Left but not important here as it is simply the way Chinese write.

It is the most accurate divinity method available in the world.

The Four Pillars of Destiny is considered by many as one of the most accurate methods of divinity in the world. It is based on the ancient Chinese Book of Changes or IChing, the principles of yin and yang, the 5 elements as well as the art of Chinese astrology. Thus it is not based on random set of predictions but a well defined set of various Chinese theories.

This is why many Feng Shui practioners are offering the service to look at a person's Eight Characters for fees that costs around US$68 onwards for the basic report plus Luck pillars.

What are the uses for knowing my Pillars of Destiny?

1. Finding a name for a newborn child.

In the past, it was a tradition of many Chinese officials, parents or grandparents to consult an expert on Pillars of Destiny to draw up and intepret a newborn's `Eight Characters'. This is to look at the child's `strengths' and `weaknesses' (if any) e.g. in one case, the child was born `lacking' the water element and the parent choose a name with Chinese Character of "Water" for his name.

The parent of the child would then keep their child's Pillars of Destiny Report for future reference or safekeeping.

2. House Planning and Decoration.

In the above example, the child lacks the Water Element and this information would be useful when he plans his house and decoration/renovations. It would thus be beneficial for his house to have more of either the Water element or Metal element to compensate this.

As the child is a Wood person his personal colours are green or brown.

3. Fortune-telling by 10 year periods.

During the Age of 10 to 19 (1980 - 1989), the period is dominated by EARTH and WOOD. You have 1 WOOD which strengthen your main element WOOD. This means that this should be a good period for you.

During the Age of 20 to 29 (1990 - 1999), the period is dominated by METAL and EARTH. You have 1 METAL which weakens your main element WOOD. This means that you should exercise caution in this period.

During the Age of 30 to 39 (2000 - 2009), the period is dominated by METAL and FIRE. You have 1 METAL which weakens your main element WOOD. This means that you should exercise caution in this period.

During the Age of 40 to 49 (2010 - 2019), the period is dominated by WATER and FIRE. You have 1 WATER which encourages your main element WOOD to grow. This means that this should be a good period for you.

During the Age of 50 to 59 (2020 - 2029), the period is dominated by WATER and EARTH. You have 1 WATER which encourages your main element WOOD to grow. This means that this should be a good period for you.

During the Age of 60 to 69 (2030 - 2039), the period is dominated by WOOD and METAL. You have 1 WOOD which strengthen your main element WOOD while 1 METAL which weakens your main element. This means that this should be a average period for you.

How do I use the above Luck Pillars?

The above Luck Pillars are matched with a person's real life experience. For example, what was your personal experience during age 10 to 19 like? Under the Pillars of Destiny calculation, please note that the age range for any individuals may differ for example another person can start from age 6 to 15 and not necessary startfrom 10 to 19 as shown in the above same. This is the unique feature of Pillars of Destiny. Don't worry unduly if the prediction like the above example ends at age 69. It does not mean that a person would die at that age but rather traditionally, Luck Pillars were calculated up to six pillars as the life expectancy in the past in China was around 60 years. One reason was the lack of health care advancement then.

Furthermore, within each Luck pillars, your luck could range between excellent, good, average and caution. The Report generated by the system is similar to one that a Feng Shui practioner will provide you with.

I understand Mr Raymond Loo of Hong Kong had made many fortune-telling predictions using Pillars of Destiny by comparing each Luck Pillars in relation to the past events of many famous persons. His books on Pillars of Destiny makes good historical reading of famous persons and their Eight Characters.

Is there a program that calculates and analyses your Pillars of Destiny?

For the first time in the Internet, you get to generate your Pillars of Destiny Report that truly calculates and analyses your Eight Characters on-line immediately on this website.

Who developed this software and how long it took to develop it?

This software was developed jointly by Robert and Cecil Lee. It took countless hours and lots of cups of coffee burning lots of midnight oil to bring you the most accurate program available. This is the first in the Internet! A Mandarin translated similar program will be available at a later stage. We are currently developing other on-line modules e.g. The Flying Star Theory etc..

How accurate is the software?

After developing the software, we went to a book store to find books on Pillars of Destiny. For example, we bought a book by Evelyn Lip called Personalise your Feng Shui, Publisher Times Books International and tried a few sample reports and found that in Page 32 of the above book, her book stated Age 48 to 57 as yin WATER ELEMENT and Age 58 to 67 as mao WATER ELEMENT which were wrongly printed maybe due to a typo error. Both the two elements should instead be WOOD.

An extract of a traditional Feng Shui assessment done by
a Feng Shui Master in 1932:-

A Pillars of Destiny produced in 1932

However, the results that our software program calculated and analysed for him provided accurate preditions of his past events especially his luck pillars. " Jokingly he said that was why the report was never accurate! How he wished there was such a program then. "

We also used the program to analyse each of our family's Luck Pillar and found that indeed it matched our past events. Wow!

The above reasons shows that on instances, for one reason or another there could be errors made by human beings. As for the program, we took the extra effort to go through the source code line by line and countless hours were spent by several friends to separately verify the information. We also did extensive test calculations. The reason is because for the Pillars of Destiny COMPUTATION MUST BE DONE CORRECTLY. If the computation and analysis (especiallythe computation) was not done correctly, the basis of the analyses undertaken will be flawed as shown by above two examples-.

Furthermore, some Feng Shui practioners only analyse the DAY Pillar and HOUR Pillar or the YEAR Pillar only. Some analyse all three pillars in relation to the stem of the DAY pillar or due to human nature forgot to compare certain pillars. The software was designed to compare all EIGHT CHARACTERS in relation to the main DAY stem making it the most powerful program available.

How often do I need to generate a Pillars of Destiny Report?

For everyone of us, we only need to generate one report for LIFE!

The EIGHT CHARACTERS alone is the most important fundamental report as it forms the basis to interpret a person's entire life. In addition to this, the LUCK PILLARS is another report that comes with this. Don't be deceived by the COMPACTNESS of the whole report. Ask any Feng Shui practioner skilled in Pillars of Destiny and they can't give you more than what is shown for both the Eight Characters and Luck Pillars.

Q. I'm puzzled as I've always thought & been told I am a Water Rabbit, based on my YEAR Pillar. Can you explain? Also, I have lots of wood furniture, except my metal bed, plus some bronze figurines, some pottery and lots of books and mags. Would this be bad for my EARTH?

A. The best way to understand this is to quote Dr. Evelyn Lip's Book Personalise Your Feng Shui, Times Books International, on Page 22, She wrote:-

"Some geomancers treat the element of the essence of the binominal as the principal factor assessing a person's horoscope. Others analyse only the and hour of birth, or only the year. However, the traditional and most accurate way is to treat the stem of the day of birth and the branches of the year, month and hour of birth as the principal factors."

In your full report, the purpose of the Pillars of Destiny is to look at all Eight elements of a person: TWO elements in his Year of birth, TWO elements in his Month of birth, TWO elements of his Day of birth and TWO elements in his Time of birth. The elements refered to are Water, Earth, Wood, Metal and Fire. This is to find out if a person has too much of any one of the elements or too little or a good balance. The philosophy behind Pillars of Destiny is harmony and balance of all the 5elements.

Therefore, taking only your year pillar and calling yourself a Water Rabbit is not as accurate as using the Pillars of Destiny to compare all your eight elements combined to find your true element i.e. NEUTRAL EARTH. Neutral earth simply means that all your elements are in balance and you do not `lack' any other elements.

For my case, based on the Pillars of Destiny, I have " NEUTRAL WOOD " and that was why my grandfather after consulting a Feng Shui Master gave me part of my name with " Tiong " in it. This is a Hokkien dialect which means CENTER or in balance.

What can we learn from this? Pillars of Destiny is one of the first report that we should have to determine our true element and whether it is in balance or out of balance e.g. excessive Fire. This requires a controlling element such as Water when we plan our house renovations.

Is the report Free?

YES, the basic calculation for your chart is Free. However, it does not include analysis of your Eight Characters. Most Feng Shui practioners charge around US$68 for a report which may or may not include the Luck pillars (10 year-by-year report) and analysis of it.
